From Tyler Landry of "Book of CLAV" infamy, regarding artwork for ".002 Seconds":

"i whipped this up for .002. the colors are what i intended, but lacking a few hints of coolness like blue, purple, etc.. in tiny, softened amounts in some key areas. i had something more dramatic intended for the layout / composition. i am gonna take another crack at this. i really want to flesh out this initial scene where bike accident man first enters and has to recoup with booze and pills and has the ass view and meets big and scary obsessive cleaning man.

i had only intended this as a rough for composition and character placement and colors and stuff. i have something really slick and sexy in mind for the finished illustration. i am going to muck about with some more views of the room and i want to dress it up with more details too. the big guy interpretation - i think he’s not quite the character he needs to be yet, but i really thought he should be a massive hulk of a man. and shaved bald / stubbly. and there’s something about having 2 flannel shirts…it’s eerie. it goes a long way as a metaphor for his psychological layers. i have to show it :D thoughts?"

Thoughts? My thoughts are that it’s awesome that he’s interested in the story enough to make art. Onward!

The Book of CLAV gallery show at Cricket Engine, January '09

Cricket Engine hosted a walk-through of “The Book of CLAV,” a modern art fable. The book pages were shown on the walls, presenting the unknown author’s journal entries and the anonymous artworks which spawned them side by side. A two hour instrumental soundtrack, composed specifically to complement and enhance the visual experience accompanied the installation.

A tale of love between him and a patron-less broom shop owner?  Hell yeah. </p>

Cerrito Speakeasy artist-of-the-month, August '08

The Cerrito Speakeasy contacted me about 8 months ago to be their August Artist-of-the-Month, based on the God's Acre artwork (which features 3 artists and a musician). Twas a challenging hang, but with a few bits of fishing line and some big fat nuts to hang at the end, it came out pretty damn cool.

<p>My friend Jen made this mobile over the weekend, and oh man, do I want her to make one for a story. Possibly the Devils, Devils, Everywhere story since there's a mobile in it, but hey, there's other options too. The point is, why restrict myself to 2D art, when talented people are doing dazzling functional sculpture that makes the imagination go pop. In a larger sense, it also pushes the idea of branding a story into an interactive experience, like dioramas or popup books, or installations that allow you to walk around within and interact with elements from a story. That's right...before Hollywood picks it up and locks down the imagination onto digital celluloid.</p><p>Beautiful work Jen. <a href="http://jenhewett.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">» Link. </a></p>

<p>courtesy of Dave Senecal, via email. </p><p>Here's his specific request: </p><blockquote><p>So, I was approached awhile ago to do a book of monsters. As in, take legends and illustrate them. As is typical I got about 3 of them done and then realized, dude, this is going to take all year. Plus, it sounds cool but I like making up  my own stuff. So, I wanted to take that idea and find people to write stories about the weird shit I made. Like, what is a Promethean? A warrior race of women who stole fire or something? Who knows. There is something that happens when I make the work.. a germ of a concept but it's like hearing snippets of someone else's conversation.  Would be nice to hear the whole thing, so what do you think of assembling something from what is already there... take my own creatures and put small histories to them, like a bestiary of sorts? I have one that I have not publsihed anywhere... it is Washer Woman, originally done for the book... but never sent them the high res and I let the deal evaporate.</p><p>It is a banshee type, who washes the blood from the armor of the warriors who have or are destine to die in battle the next day. Anyway attached is a smaller version if you think you might want to put some words to it. The moon in it is crap, but I would fix it later. It would be nice to find more artists to contribute to the bestiary  too so we would have more variety and a better chance of getting it out. </p></blockquote>

<p>from <a href="http://www.boingboing.net/2008/04/28/artist-repairs-spide.html" target="blank">Boingboing</a>:</p> <blockquote><p>Artist Nina Katchadourian tried repairing spider webs with thread, but her efforts were rebuffed: "My repairs were always rejected by the spider and discarded, usually during the course of the night, even in webs which looked abandoned."</p><p>The Mended Spiderweb series came about during a six-week period in June and July in 1998 which I spent on Pörtö. In the forest and around the house where I was living, I searched for broken spiderwebs which I repaired using red sewing thread. All of the patches were made by inserting segments one at a time directly into the web. Sometimes the thread was starched, which made it stiffer and easier to work with. The short threads were held in place by the stickiness of the spider web itself; longer threads were reinforced by dipping the tips into white glue. I fixed the holes in the web until it was fully repaired, or until it could no longer bear the weight of the thread. In the process, I often caused further damage when the tweezers got tangled in the web or when my hands brushed up against it by accident.</p></blockquote><p> I find this incredibly presumptuous on the part of the artist. And that presumption is a fantastic sketch of a character who sees the world is necessarily capable of being saved. Or wanting to be.  </p>

Mural by Kevin Taylor (135 6th st. at Minna Alley, SF). Love animal heads on people, love bandanas as masks (now appearing in “Elbina Rides Again”, a short story in-progress).
