Cape Cod Writers' Center

Rosie hipped me to this. They have an annual conference with workshops and manuscript evaluations. I'm not sure how important it is that you live near Cape Cod, but I shall find out.

The Writing Salon: Bay Area writing classes

Suggested by Rosie Atkins as a good place for one-off classes. I'll be looking these over and trying one out very shortly.

Montalvo Arts residency

This article talks about the Montalvo Arts residency, which I'd love to try to apply for in a year or two from now.

Here's about the program itself (http://montalvoarts.org/residency/selection/):

The selection process for the Lucas Artists Programs is set up to ensure the participation of a wide range of talented and committed artists from the local area and around the world. Based on the MacArthur Fellowship system, we use a recommendation/invitational approach with a constantly changing group of nominators and jurors from around the world.

Candidates are identified by members of a panel of nominators and are invited to submit an application for review by a jury of recognized artists and professionals from within their discipline. In addition, with the support of grants from the Hewlett and Irvine Foundations, the Lucas Artists Programs is committed to encouraging the work of local artists within the state of California. Approximately 20 percent participants in the Lucas Artists Programs are California artists selected by nominators and jurors from within the state.

Unlike the "open call" application process, this recommendation/invitational approach allows the organization to target artists from underserved communities and provide them with thoughtful attention by the selection panelists.

Editing for Effective Communication

This Saturday, I attended a workshop through the Berkeley Extension program at Cal, taught by Stuart Froman. Pretty good 4-hour marathon session on editing either your own work or someone else's work.

The most memorable take-away is that editing is not about changing things; the role of an editor is to understand the purpose of the piece and then change AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE in order to make sure it delivers on that purpose. That's a way of thinking about editing I had never heard of, but it obviously makes a lot of sense.

The second-most memorable take-away is that there is a difference between an editor's preference for style, and an editor's recognition of an error. It is the editor's duty to figure out the difference, to ignore the former, and to focus on the latter. And the tool to do this is the ability to articulate why something is wrong, or needs to be changed. If you cannot say, in simple English, why something is wrong, then it may not be wrong. I found some of the exercises very helpful in determining the difference, as well as simply expanding my vocabulary on how to talk about things that don't seem correct which will obviously make the editing process easier in general.

We spent most of the time on a very interesting exercise, which I'll explain in detail here.
